In 1897, with the railroad dividing the town of Weatherford, the Baptists on the north side of the railroad tracks joined together to form their own church. The church was first named Second Baptist Church and was located on the southwest corner of First Street and North Main Street.
In 1908 B.G. Fronabarger was the pastor and the church was renamed North Side Baptist Church. Under Pastor Fronabarger's leadership new members were added, additions were made to the original buildings, and a Ladies Aid and Missionary Society was founded.
In 1912, C.H. Ray became pastor. The church purchased property on the east side of North Main Street, and in 1917 built a three story brick building. Pastor Ray also organized a band and an orchestra, and North Side Baptist Church became known as "the most interesting place in town".
During World War II, the church aided the soldiers at Fort Wolters in Mineral Wells and helped to begin the first chapel there under the leadership of Pastor Glenn Bales.
In 1960, when Bob McPherson was pastor, a new sanctuary was built and the old sanctuary was remodeled for educational space. The front of that modern sanctuary was known for its stained glass. Joe Griffin was pastor from 1961 until 1982. During that time the church enjoyed consistent growth and ministry, and again expanded its facility. A new educational building, chapel, fellowship hall, kitchen, several additional classrooms and offices were built. Another remodeling project began in 1985 when Alex Campbell was pastor, completely refurbished the existing sanctuary. It was completed in 1989 after Don Emmitte became pastor. The church's new focal point is a 75 foot white cross which can be seen from many locations around Weatherford. A Community Life Center, completed in 1998, has hosted many church and community events.
In 2004, the church expanded its foyer space and added two beautiful and modern restrooms. Under the leadership of Pastor Van N. Houser, NSBC is growing at a quick pace. Plans are in place for a new children's building, a new auditorium, and the rennovation of other key areas within the church.
Today North Side Baptist Church continues to grow and add new programs and facilities to meet the needs of our congregation and community. Our church is known for its inspirational worship services, a wide variety of Bible study classes for all ages, a strong youth program, a music ministry for all ages, a children's day out ministry, a senior ministry, a music and missions program for children, plus various Bible studies and support groups. It is a very exciting time to be a part of the history of North Side.
